As Associate Provost for Academic Affairs at CalArts, Brian Harlan oversees faculty development, curriculum, accreditation, assessment, program review, institutional research, strategic planning, and online education for the institute. He serves as the Accreditation Liaison Officer for WASC Senior College and University Commission, as well as the lead for national, specialized accreditation for art and design, music, and dance (NASAD, NASM, and NASD). Other administrative posts held before coming to CalArts include Assistant Dean for Academic Assessment & Planning at Occidental College, and Director of Assessment and Access Services for the University of Sothern California library system. Brian earned his Ph.D in Music History at USC, and his MA in Systematic and Ethnomusicology at UCLA. He teaches courses on interdisciplinary approaches to the study of music, and has published and presented widely on music as well as assessment, accreditation, and academic planning practices.
