Jeannene M. Przyblyski is an artist, historian and educator. She holds a Ph.D in the History of Art at UC Berkeley and has held positions as tenured faculty in the School for Interdisciplinary Studies and Vice President/Dean of Academic Affairs at the San Francisco Art Institute. In 2012 she was appointed Provost and Faculty in the School of Art at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Los Angeles.
As an artist and scholar, Przyblyski works on questions of people, place and representational regimes, publishing widely on photography, media and urbanism and focusing her artistic practice on creative place-making projects that make visible the contested landscapes all around us. Most recently, she is working on a major commission in South Central Los Angeles, involving CalArts faculty, students and alumni, for the Los Angeles County Arts Commission.
As an academic leader, Przyblyski prioritizes sustainability for both institutions and emerging artists/cultural producers. She has worked to pioneer online learning initiatives, to increase awareness of the multiple career options enabled by an education in the arts and to create programs that provide stronger foundations for student success and faculty development, including the Provost’s Research + Practice Fellowship program at CalArts, now going into its second year, that provides research and professional development opportunities for BFA-level students to work on faculty-driven creative projects.
